THE UV PROBLEM
Ocular UV Overexposure Is a Real Problem
The everyday dangers of UV
Lifetime cumulative UV doses can be reduced by instilling good protective practices early in life.
Children are particularly vulnerable to UVR damage because:
• They have larger pupils.a
• They have clearer lenses. 75% of UVR is transmitted to children under the age of 10, compared to 10% transmittance for those older than 25.b,c
• They tend to spend more time outdoors than adults, so they’re exposed to more UVR.
• Few children wear adequate eye protection. In a recent study, it was estimated that only 3% of children regularly wear sunglasses.d
